What exactly is meant by domestic adoptions? Domestic adoption simply means you are adopting from your home country, rather than internationally. Domestic adoptions can be done privately, or through an adoption or foster care agency. You must be at least 25 years old and a U.S. citizen.
The big fear for prospective adoptive parents in domestic adoptions seems to be the idea of open adoptions, meaning your child may have ongoing contact with his or her birth parent(s). The last and final step in an adoption is the legal process which with finality completes the process. As you can imagine, all of the work and proofs must be submitted to the Court in advance of the hearing date. Assuming everything is in order, a hearing date is scheduled and the adoptive parents and child or children appear in Court for finalization of the legal process. The hearing is before a judge. The parents are sworn in and a series of questions must be answered. Assuming all the information is in accordance with our laws, the judge grants the adoption! Whether to adopt domestic or international is an age old question that perplexes many a prospective adoptive parent. Of course, the stories you hear about are the horror stories:
If you go the International route you don’t know what kind of prenatal care the birth mother received. Further, is the child placed in an orphanage or a foster home? Are they nurtured as infants? Will they be able to bond with your family?
Other “issues” surrounding International adoption include that often International adoptions offer older children, and some countries have strict rules about age, marital status and health (including mental health). The first step in commencing the adoption process is exploring your options and learning the eligibility requirements for adoptive parents. If pursuing adoption with the assistance of an agency, it is important to research the agency’s criteria for accepting applicants. Some agencies will only consider couples married for a certain number of years, between the ages of 25 and 40, and with stable employment. However, there are other agencies that accept applicants who are older than age 40. Some agencies require that the couple have no other children. Some require that at least one parent not work outside the home for at least 6 months after the adoption. If you are considering an international adoption, every country has requirements that prospective adoptive parents must meet. These requirements vary by country and typically pertain to age, income, number of existing children in the home, some indicator of marital stability and, in the case of single applicants, gender, although, some countries have unusual eligibility requirements. Adoptions can also be arranged without an agency known as a private placement adoption. Initial contacts can be made directly between a birth mother and the prospective adoptive parents. On this, the 10th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, there is much pain in remembrance.
